Amma Masika

Amma is a Malayalam monthly magazine published from Angamaly, Kerala. It was founded in 1950 by Rev. Fr. Joseph Mavunkal as the official publication of the Mathru Sangham, an organization he established in 1941 to inspire mothers to view their family roles as missionary work. Both initiatives began during his tenure as Pro Vicar at St. Mary’s Basilica, Ernakulam.

Originally a handwritten quarterly, Amma transitioned to a monthly printed publication within two years. In 1962, Fr Mavunkal established a press (St. Martin De Porress press) at Angamaly, the magazine began publishing from there. Then he invited the Sisters of Nazareth (CSN) from Edakkunnu who dedicated to the upliftment of families and women, joined as collaborators in this mission.

By 1972, due to age-related infirmities, Fr. Mavunkal transferred ownership of the magazine and the press to the CSN Sisters. While he continued as editor until 1979, Rev. Fr. Jose Thachil succeeded him. Sr. Jemma CSN served as editor from 1993 to 1997, followed by Sr. Shobha CSN, who has held the position since 1997.

In 2006, Amma Magazine was honored with the Shalom Foundation Award for the best Christian publication in Kerala.
